PA WINTER SPORTS MUSEUM ELECTS 2006 HALL OF FAME MEMBERS

Ten leading figures in the history of skiing in the state were inducted in the Hall of Fame of the Pennsylvania Ski and Winter Sports Museum. The Class of 2006 was honored at a special luncheon ceremony at Seven Springs Mountain Resort in Champion, PA. Those recognized for contributions to the development of winter sports included the head of the state's most popular ski area, several prominent members of the National Ski Patrol and well-known organizers of competitive programs.

Herman Kress Dupre was saluted for 40 years of leadership in transforming Seven Springs from a tiny ski area into an internationally known, year-round resort. His deceased parents, Bavarian immigrants who founded the area, were inducted into the Hall of Fame three years ago.

Gordie Bell, W. Peter Benson, Eleanor B. Jessum, John Willard Shaffer, and Victoria Freyer Shaner were noted for major contributions to growth of the National Ski Patrol and its "samaritans in the snow" role. Bell, a patroller at Ski Roundtop for more than three decades, had taught many others, and received numerous NSP awards and certifications. Benson, a longtime patroller who is also an emergency medical technician, is safety director of the National Brotherhood of Skiers, and former president of the Eastern Pennsylvania Ski Council, which has more than 40 clubs.

Jessum, a National Ski Patrol historian, patrolled for 41 years, established ski patrols at several areas, and received many honors. Shaffer, an NSP veteran of 30 years and American Red Cross first aid instructor, served at Laurel Mountain. As a regional director he supervised 14 ski patrols. Shaner, one of the first female patrollers at Seven Springs, founded ski clubs in western Pennsylvania. She was a major force in the creation of the Hall of Fame and handled many of its administrative details. She and Shaffer were honored posthumously.

Frank "Doc" Lavin was a school teacher when he saw the need for children and adults with mental retardation to get off the sidelines and into life-enriching sports. He introduced Special Olympics programs at Elk Mountain that became highly successful. Doctor John Dematte was one of the founders of organized ski racing in the state and was long a leader in the Pennsylvania Alpine Racing Association (PARA). He was credited with developing standards of performance for race officials.

Harry E. Griffith, Sr. and Harry E. Griffith, Jr. were both honored in the area of competition. The father organized a junior racing program for children of many ski clubs. He chaired PARA and was active in developing the first state championships. His son began racing at age 10, became state champion as a youth, competed at Dartmouth and was a downhiller on national teams. These honorees were selected from nominations made by the general public and approved by the museum's Board of Directors. Board president Albert Dowden, assisted by master of ceremonies Jay Lloyd, presented special plaques to the new members of the Hall of Fame. The audience of families, friends and industry officials received souvenir booklets that highlight achievements of the inductees.
